NZ racing personalities named in New Year Honours
Three people involved inwards New Zealand’s racing manufacture accept been recognised inwards the country’s New Year's Day Honours list, led past times racehorse breeder Peter Vela, who has been awarded a Knighthood.
He is joined by Donald George McLaren, ONZM, who was made a Companion of the Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to the animate beingness wellness manufacture too racing, and Karyn Wendy Fenton-Ellis, who was made a Member of the companionship (MNZM) for services to the community, arts too racing.
Vela, who already held an ONZM, was i of 4 to last awarded knighthoods, along alongside onetime Christchurch mayor Bob Parker, Anglican Archbishop David John Moxon, too Maori pedagogy leader Dr Noble Thomson Curtis.

Vela, who along alongside his brother, Phillip, ain Pencarrow Stud too New Zealand Bloodstock, bred 2001 Melbourne Cup winner Ethereal. NZ Bloodstock is likewise a major sponsor of British based New Zealand eventer Mark Todd, who was knighted inwards the previous New Year's Day Honours.
Donald McLaren is the owner of Bomac Laboratories, a corporate partner of Massey University’s Institute of Veterinary, Animal too Biomedical Sciences. He was likewise president of the Auckland Racing Club too has served on several organisations including the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association too the New Zealand Racing Conference. McLaren is a fellow member of the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame.
Karyn Fenton-Ellis is a managing director Te Akau Stud too was the initiatory presenter of New Zealand’s racing channel, Trackside, inwards 1992. Formerly of Timaru only straight off based inwards the Waikato, she was elected chair of the Waikato Racing Club inwards 2013 too is a fellow member of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Members’ Council.
