Evidence of horse sacrifices at ancient Swedish monument

The remains of sacrificed animals, including horses, bring been unearthed past times Swedish archaeologists at the site of a massive latterly unearthed monument.

The monument, which dates from almost 1500 years ago, was flora inwards Gamla Uppsala inwards primal Sweden, only a few hundred metres from good documented majestic burual mounds.
It was unearthed past times archaeologists ahead of the structure of a railway line.
The monument, from the Swedish Iron Age, comprised 2 long rows of upright wooden poles. One row was nearly a kilometre long too comprised 144 pillars. The other was at to the lowest degree 500 meters long.
“This is an extraordinary monument,” said projection director Lena Beronius-Jörpeland, an archeologist amongst the country’s National Heritage Board.
It may bring been some shape of territorial mark or of religious significance, he said.
“We know that Gamla Uppsala was the centre of a pre-Christian cult. We believe that the wooden poles bring been high, perhaps upwards of 8 to x feet. They’ve been seen from afar too perchance flanked a path toward Gamla Uppsala.”
Little show remains of the poles, except for the large too deep pits amongst rock contents.
In some of the pits, the archaeologists flora some remnants of the posts too several of them contained animate beingness bones, indicating that sacrifices were made. The remains comprised horses, cows too pigs. In i pit, the skeleton of a puppy was found.

“We know of real few like monuments inwards Scandinavia,” Beronius-Jörpeland said, adding that this was the largest flora to date.
Gamla Uppsala has long been known for its impressive burial mounds from some 600 AD. The centre had of import functions of religion, justice, commerce too crafts during the Iron Age.
The precise purpose of the monument too who built it bring nevertheless to endure determined. Archaeologists are too unclear at this phase what links, if any, the monument had to the nearby burial mounds.
