Queensland scientists are reviewing Hendra virus cases from previous years to ameliorate empathise why some horses choke infected too others create not.

Biosecurity Queensland researcher Dr Hume Field said the mutual subdivision inwards most cases was horses resting nether trees where flight foxes were active.

“On to a greater extent than than eighty per cent of properties where at that topographic point were Hendra virus cases, horses ‘camped’ nether trees that flight foxes were feeding in,” Field said.

“This reinforces the importance of Biosecurity Queensland advice well-nigh stopping Equus caballus access to fruiting too flowering trees that may attract flight foxes.”

Field said the Queensland Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases (QCEID) was analysing the information from properties inwards Queensland too northern New South Wales where the cluster of Hendra virus cases occurred inwards 2011 too 2012 to hold off for patterns.

“QCEID scientists are using profiling to position characteristics mutual to affected properties,” he said.

Profiling is a technique used to position characteristics associated amongst item behaviours, actions or outcomes.

“We get together information on local flight play tricks activity on too around the property, on Equus caballus characteristics too behaviour, too on Equus caballus husbandry practices.

“By talking amongst the belongings possessor too walking around the property, nosotros tin laissez passer on notice oftentimes position the potential ‘ground zero’ for flight foxes too horses coming into contact.”

Dr Field said early on findings from the 2011 cases showed quite a clear moving-picture exhibit of potential interaction.

Almost xc per cent of properties showed bear witness of recent flight play tricks activity, including nutrient debris too urine or faeces nether trees, too on to a greater extent than than eighty per cent of properties, horses ‘camped’ nether trees that flight foxes were feeding in.

“We are too looking at pasture abundance too quality, merely we’re non seeing a straight human relationship amongst Hendra virus risk.

“Even when pasture was poor, horses were by too large inwards skilful status because of supplementary feeding, then piteous nutrition or hunger don’t appear to locomote run a peril factors.

“However, nosotros are continuing to explore whether a horse’s natural inquisitiveness or wish for dark-green ‘pick’ inwards curt pasture may growth the run a peril of eating contaminated material.”
